A Letter From The President

Hello Families and Friends of GiGi’s Playhouse Tampa. This is your board president, Amanda Cordero!

March was a really fun month filled with all sorts of activities around 3/21. Thank you City of Tampa for lighting up City Hall blue and yellow for World Down Syndrome Day! A big Thank You to CrossFit Iron Legion in Ocala for raising money for us at Down for Donuts. This also reinvigorated Sam and Nick to start working out again. They may even want to have their own team next year, so reach out to us if you’d like to know more. Our Town Halls went great and we received a lot of helpful feedback from families. We will be planning more Town Halls each quarter, so please feel free to join one and give the board your feedback.

GFAC coming soon on April 27th at Gadsden Park. We have some pretty awesome prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams that bring in the most donations. Make sure you create your team and ask family and friends to join, donate, or even create their own teams. Fitness, fun, and community connection all in one! And don’t forget your $15 cash for the Nifty 50% Papa John’s cards.

The Indo American Charity Golf Tournament is coming in May and Top Golf in July. The expansion and the capital campaign for it are in full swing. We are looking for sponsors and donors if you know of a company that might be interested. We have flyers and donor letters available to share at the Playhouse. We are going to start dine & donate events in each area of town, since we don’t all live in Tampa. We’re looking for families in each area that may want to help run their dine & donate events, and we’re looking for restaurant ideas. If you have any interest, reach out to the board or the staff.  We are also now listing all committee and board meetings on the GiGi’s calendar. If you have interest in a committee or would like to address the board, please check the calendar and reach out to the board or staff.

Thank you for all your love and support! See you at the Playhouse!

Volunteer Spotlight

Bill Ogg, Program Lead

GiGi’s Playhouse is my ‘Happy Place’ and I look forward to continuing my volunteer work at GiGi’s and advocating for how the world views Down syndrome. – Bill Ogg

Bill’s GiGi’s Journey:  Bill is one of our amazing Program Lead Volunteers and currently runs the GiGi’s Kitchen Teen program on Saturdays. Although you will find him at the Playhouse helping with many other programs and events! He loves meeting and working with all of our participants, family members, and other volunteers. Bill finds joy in empowering and motivating participants to achieve their Best of Alls each time they are in the playhouse.

A Little More About Bill:  Bill is from Cape Cod, Massachusetts and moved to Tampa just two years ago from Charlotte, NC. He previously was the owner of a personalized pet care business, Oggie’s Doggies which led him to work with therapy dogs, creating dog training videos, and sharing dog care advice on local TV networks. He of course, is a proud dog dad to his own rescue dog, Dudley (Duds for short), who is extremely loved and spoiled. Bill has actively volunteered over the past several years at the Humane Society of Charlotte, San Diego, and West Palm Beach as well as at local community theatre, Carrollwood Cultural Center – Tampa.
Bill was also a Camp Director at JCC and YMCA where he was able to work with individuals with Down syndrome and Autism. This is where he first experienced the importance of inclusion for all. Observing all of the campers interacting together was an amazing experience and made for such memorable summers!

Bill’s Fun Fact: He is an 80s enthusiast and loves all things related to that time: music, fashion, movies/tv, and all related nostalgia. Are we sensing an 80s themed party hosted by Bill in our future??

Best of All

Best of all (noun) /best of all/: It is a daily challenge to do a little better than you did the day before and it is always celebrated!

Today we celebrate Benicio, a Leaps & Bounds regular, who’s engagement continues to grow with each class! In his first initial classes he has taken the time to get comfortable with his surroundings by only observing the program’s activities. During the most recent class though, Benicio showed interest in each part of the program and participated during the activities! His favorite parts were the coloring activity where he helped mom color in his coloring page. Then, during open play time in the gym, Benicio found his favorite toy – a small ride on toy car – that he loved and engaged with until clean up time. Benicio becoming comfortable enough to actively participate in these group activities throughout the program is an exciting achievement and we continue to celebrate each step he takes!
